There have been reports that the number of streams for R. Kelly’s music actually increased following the debut of Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly. However, it appears the three-night docuseries was effective in helping to mute Kelly on the radio.
According to Billboard, songs by Kelly totaled 1.25 million all-format radio audience impressions on January 3, the day Surviving debuted. That number dropped to 806,000 on January 5, 380,000 on January 6, and 198,000 on January 7.
Activists disturbed by the sexual, mental, and physical abuse allegations against the R&B singer started the #MuteRKelly campaign. Over 100,000 people have signed a Care2 petition that’s calling on radio stations, streaming services, and venues to stop supporting Kelly.
Surviving R. Kelly featured interviews with over 50 individuals who provided details about the 25-year history of accusations leveled against the RCA Records artist. Authorities in Illinois and Georgia are now investigating R. Kelly. He has denied all claims.
