Russia accused of using Facebook to spy in French election campaign

On 27 July the Reuters reported that Russia allegedly used fake Facebook accounts to follow the campaign of the new French President Emmanuel Macron.

In particular, the article states that multiple accounts in Facebook were created only in order to follow employees of Macron. It is assumed that is how the Russian agents obtained personal information about representatives of the campaign.

"Facebook confirmed to Reuters that it had detected spying accounts in France and deactivated them. " The report reads.

"The spying campaign included Russian agents posing as friends of friends of Macron associates and trying to glean personal information from them"

Previously, experts of the Japanese company Trend Micro accused Russian hackers of interference with the elections of the French President.
