Several units of India's financial services conglomerate Religare Enterprises have suffered a cyber attack, but its systems, operations and sensitive client information are “completely safe” and its cyber security cell is investigating into the matter.
"We are assessing the situation and will come back to you with details. However, our systems, operations and client information remain unaffected and secure," said the spokesperson on Monday.
The cyber attack had affected servers on Monday and at least some of the internal IT systems at the brokerage had been shut down, told sources. Some staff had lost access to computer systems as technical teams worked to fix the problem, sources added.
Religare, which offers a broad range of financial services including equities and commodity trading under holding company Religare Enterprises Ltd (RELG.NS), added the attack was of "medium severity," and that "necessary damage control steps" had been taken.
The companies that feature under Religare Group are Religare Enterprises Ltd, Religare Finvest Ltd and Religare Housing Development Finance Corp. Ltd.
It was unclear what type of disruption had hit Religare. The company said the problem is exactly not in the nature of cyber attacks and there were some stray incidents, following which an advisory was issued from the IT department of the company.
IT systems across the globe in the recent past have been facing some or the other kind of malware attacks with the intention to extract ransom from the system owners. The attack comes at a time of heightened attention on cyber security after global businesses were hit by two major infections containing ransomware requests in recent months.
In May, a nasty new ransomware strain began infecting PCs around the world. The malware, called NotPetya, spread faster than the notorious WannaCry ransomware. The Petya malware affected operations at the terminal of country’s largest container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) on June 27 night. The attack also crippled some central banks and many large corporations in Europe.
Ransomware is a malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. It encrypts files stored on the user's computer or mobile device and renders it unreadable by the user or the device. In order to restore it for normal use, a decryption key is needed to unlock the file.
