Yes, you can easily crash your friends’ WhatsApp just by sending Smileys, Sounds Interesting? Not only mobile app but also WhatsApp Web.
As reported by Indrajeet Bhuyan, Independent Security Researcher, a new bug in WhatsApp that could allow anyone to remotely crash WhatsAapp by sending about 4000 emoticons to the target user, thereby affecting up to 1 Billion WhatsApp users.
The same guy, Bhuyan had also reported WhatsApp crash bug last year that required 2000 words (2kb in size) message in the special character set to remotely crash Whatsapp application.
“In WhatsApp Web, Whatsapp allows nearly 65500-6600 characters, However after typing 4200-4400 emoticons browser starts slowing down.
The recent vulnerability tested on different Android devices by multiple brands and successfully crashed:
- WhatsApp for Web for Chrome, Opera and Firefox web browsers.
- WhatsApp for Android devices including Marshmallow, Lollipop and Kitkat
However if you are a victim of this flaw you can protect yourself just buy opening your messenger and delete the whole conversation with the sender. Also remember, if you have kept some records of your previous chat with that particular friend, you’ll end up losing them all.
